Furnishing a school, which chairs and stools to choose?

Furnishing a school is not simple, but not impossible. It is necessary just follow some simple advices, avoiding unnecessary waste of money without, however, giving up ergonomics and its importance for our health.

We know that the situation of classrooms in Italian schools is very backward from an ergonomic point of view. Every day we see students who adapt to school furnishings when, as we all know, it should be the other way around, in order to prevent the birth of pain and postural problems.

But what can be done to avoid this? Surely the first step, to be partially taken every year, is the progressive replacement of all the chairs and benches, that are broken, damaged and holed but are however still in use.

What are we going to replace them with? The best thing would be to purchase desks and chairs or stools that are at least adjustable in height, so that they can be used correctly by students of all heights, always ensuring correct posture in the various didactic activities that are carried out.

Types of classroom

Before deciding which desks and which chairs to buy when furnishing a school, we need to ask ourselves what type of classroom we want to create.

There are, in fact, multifunctional classrooms, in which different activities take place and each student occupies the same station throughout the school day; or there are specific laboratories in which the activity carried out is always the same, but the students who carry it out vary from hour to hour.

The tables used for multipurpose classrooms are those that allow height adjustment, but also the possible inclination of the countertop. These tables are suitable for normal teaching activities, as well as for drawing or reading activities.

In the specific laboratories, on the other hand, the most congenial table will be inserted for the activity that will be carried out within it.

For example, a classroom used as a computer laboratory will only require the height adjustment of the countertop, while in a drawing laboratory the most important aspect is the inclination of the worktop.

Just like for the tables, the possibility of height adjustment also applies to chairs or stools. First of all, to guarantee the correct posture for students of different heights, but also to maintain that difference of about 30 cm between the height of the desk and the height of the seat.

If we look closely, the standard height of a desk is around 75 cm, while the standard seat height of a chair is normally 45 cm. This difference of 30 cm allows the legs to move once seated and guarantees the right support for the elbows on the table top.

The height of the work surface of the desk will therefore determine the height of the chair or stool.

Even the subjects and topics taught in classrooms can help define which chair will be most suitable. In this regard, we remind you that work stools can be equipped with castors or glides, with or without armrests.

1) Design and planning classrooms

For all those classrooms where you study design, architecture, fashion and, therefore, you go to design and design, you will need to reach higher heights than those of a simple desk and for this reason the use of a stool is preferred. Grendene offers its own mod. 1109 in beech, with fooring welded to the base and backrest adjustable in height and depth, or mod. 1150 with height adjustable aluminum footring and round seat without backrest.

2) Laboratory classrooms

When, on the other hand, you work in a laboratory, it is better to opt for an alternative material such as polyurethane. Grendene proposes the mod. 1250, with nylon base and castors, or the new work stool mod. Caty 80, also without armrests, to allow greater movement for those who use it.

3) Study rooms and waiting rooms

For all those areas set up as study rooms or waiting rooms, you can choose a fixed chair with a 4-legged or sled structure. We recommend our Greem line, with polypropylene seat and back, which are resistant and very easy to clean.
