The correct posture in the office

Nowadays, the amount of workers who spend their days in front of a PC has dramatically multiplied, but episodes of postural problems have also dramatically multiplied. The question of how to maintain correct posture in the office therefore arises spontaneously. In this short article we will offer you some small tricks to implement to ensure a healthy office life.

How to make our workstation ergonomic for a correct posture

The first step is to make a workstation as functional and ergonomic as possible. To do this we must intervene on everything that surrounds us and on which we rely. We will talk about the desk, the position of the monitor, the mouse and the keyboard, concluding with the most relevant part, that is our ergonomic task chair.

Desk

The ideal is to have a height-adjustable desk, this being a very subjective system and determined by the physical characteristics of the individual.

The desk must be adjusted in such a way as to allow the arms to rest on the surface, with the formation of an angle of approximately 90°. In the event that you do not have an adjustable desk, it becomes essential to use a correct ergonomic office chair, in order to make up for this lack and obtain the desired result.

Now let’s see the arrangement of all the devices and devices positioned on the desk.

Mouse, keyboard and monitor are devices that are certainly present on every worker’s desk.

Let’s start from our beloved monitor; there are some small rules that will benefit our eyes and the cervical area of the neck. The monitor must not be placed at a distance lower than our arm extended forward, while the height of our device must be kept below the line of our eyes.

The health of our shoulders will depend on the position of the mouse and keyboard. In fact, they will have to be more or less aligned with our shoulders. This situation will allow our shoulders not to remain in an inconvenient position of extra rotation of our elbow for too long.

Now let’s talk about the most important adjustment: our chair or work stool.

Office chair for correct posture

Most of the physical problems in the office concern the back. Pain in the lumbar area often depends on incorrect adjustment of the office chair or on the chair itself, which does not comply with the necessary ergonomic characteristics and, consequently, with the regulations.

The adjustment of the office chair involves a series of expedients. The most important concerns the height of the seat, which must guarantee the formation of a 90° angle with the knees, keeping the feet firmly on the ground.

correct postureAs anticipated previously, speaking of the desk, the adjustment of the office chair must guarantee the creation of another 90 ° angle with the arms. As for the backrest, however, it must offer a counter-resistance to our bust which must be slightly inclined forward, but always in contact with it.

In chairs equipped with lumbar support, this must be adjusted so that it pushes at the height of the kidneys, helping to maintain the natural “S” shape of the spine. Many of our ergonomic chairs provide lumbar support, but this does not mean that its functioning is always the same.

To give two simple examples, in our Juke 50 model, the lumbar support is integrated into the backrest and, therefore, for its adjustment it will be necessary to raise or lower the latter; vice versa, however, in models such as the Omega 600 armchair, the backrest is fixed and the lumbar support is external and independently adjustable.
