What makes wood sustainable? Nowadays, attention to the ecological impact of a company has become increasingly essential; both with respect for the planet, which is increasingly in difficulty due to our reckless attitudes, and for consumers, who increasingly look at the way a company operates.
Today we want to make a small focus on the most sustainable raw material on the face of the earth: wood.
It is incredible to think how such a simple material, within everyone’s reach, has an kinds of use and can have such a decisive impact on our ecological system.
So, let’s look at 3 reasons that make wood sustainable.
-
Sustainable woodworking
The use of wood in the production phase is more common than you think; the sectors for its use are many and very varied.
In our chairs, for example, it is used for the interiors of the seats and backrests of many padded chairs, for the beech seats and backrests of many stools or even, as in the case of the mod. President L, for the creation of the armrests and the spokes that make up the base.
We can see that, unlike many other materials, its processing is much less polluting. Furthermore, there is a moderate and more controlled use of glues and solvents, but above all, a simpler processing with few steps and the consequent reduction in energy used.
Wood, among other things, is one of the few renewable raw materials. It is both recyclable and can be used to generate energy. This makes it one of the materials used in production chains that generates less waste.
From the same waste, for example, it is possible to use chips to create chipboard panels or even pellets for stoves.

Our certifications
From the 1990s to today there has been excessive deforestation; to give an idea, from 1990 to today, an area of forest the size of Europe has disappeared.
The importance of biodiversity and forests within our ecological system is of imperative importance.
Just think of the fact that many scientists have highlighted how the deforestation of recent decades has partly affected the climate change we are experiencing today and has also led, unfortunately, to the extinction of some animal species.
Our choice
For a series of reasons, therefore, in an attempt to reverse this trend, certifications have been established with the aim of protecting our environmental heritage, trees and forests.
We would therefore like to tell you about one of our certifications, the FSC certification. This is a certification that guarantees the eco-compatibility of wood with respect to the environment.
The FSC certified wood, which we use for our production, guarantees the derivation of the wood from forests handled in a conscious and ”sustainable” way.
It is worth noting that this is not limited only to a control of the origin of the wood, but also takes into consideration the protection and respect of what may be the needs of a local population living near the forest.

Recyclability in production
As you may have guessed from the previous lines, wood is a natural material, extremely precious and to be protected at all costs; we can, therefore, define it as an infinitely recyclable element.
We Italians are excellent in this; data from 2016 suggests that we have been able to manage and recycle more than 1.5 million tonnes of wood, which equates to approximately 63% of wood waste.
The fundamental body for the recycling and collection of wood is certainly the national Rilegno consortium, from which we learned these data.
We at Grendene are trying to implement the so-called “circular economy” within our production process.
In doing so, we produce chairs that are increasingly easy to disassemble, to simplify disposal, but which are also durable over time. Furthermore, we provide an assistance service, which includes the repair or replacement of some components which, after years, may wear out.
We chose this path because we strongly believe in the durability and consequent sustainability of our products; it is no coincidence that our slogan is NEVER ENDING CHAIRS, ”chairs that never end”.
In conclusion
We hope to have provided you with some clarifications regarding the use of wood and, furthermore, also to have raised some awareness on the topic of sustainability.
If you need to purchase an office chair or stools or armchairs, we will be happy to support you and guide you towards a conscious, quality and environmentally friendly choice.
