Tailoring chairs and stools: A Complete Buying Guide

In tailoring environments where working days are often long and demanding, it is common to experience lower back or cervical issues. This type of discomfort can arise for various reasons, but the most common cause is the incorrect choice of tailoring chairs, which often leads to unnatural and improper postures.

Aches and pains among tailoring professionals originate precisely from this issue: chairs and stools that do not promote correct posture during daily use.

In many cases, we still find the classic wooden chair, sometimes with a woven straw seat, lacking any form of comfort or adjustability. To avoid this mistake, it is essential to consider several fundamental aspects and parameters in order to choose a product “tailored” to your specific manufacturing context.

Parameters to consider before choosing

Before investing in chairs or stools for your tailoring workshop, it is important to evaluate several parameters and contextual aspects where the new stools will be placed:

  • Counter height
    The height of the counter influences the choice of height adjustment for tailoring chairs or work stools. Adjusting the seat height promotes correct posture and helps prevent strain in the lumbar and cervical areas. At this link we explain the correct postures for those who work seated;
  • Daily hours of use
    Another key factor is daily usage. Understanding how many hours per day the chairs are used will help you choose the upholstery, configuration, adjustments, and supports for your tailoring chairs;
  • Safety and compliance testing
    Choosing products that have passed CATAS compliance tests and feature fire-retardant upholstery represents a concrete guarantee in terms of safety and reliability.

Once your needs have been identified, it is time to move toward the model best suited to your tailoring or textile production.

Tailoring chairs with wheels or glides

When it comes to tailoring chairs, we will take model 1100 as a reference. It is a cost-effective solution that, thanks to customizable seat and backrest upholstery, can represent a significant upgrade for your workstations.

a) Fabric tailoring chairs

Fire-retardant fabric is the ideal choice for those who require a durable and resistant material without sacrificing comfort. Fabric is generally not recommended in extremely dusty environments;

b) Eco-leather tailoring chairs

Eco-leather is suitable for those seeking a feel similar to genuine leather, offering additional softness compared to standard fire-retardant fabric. Generally, eco-leather does not provide the same level of durability as high-quality fabric. Its advantages certainly include comfort, ease of cleaning, and fire-retardant properties;

c) Polyurethane tailoring stools

Finally, we come to polyurethane. Among the three materials, polyurethane is certainly the most resistant to wear, though it offers lower comfort. It is a harder material designed for environments where daily use is less than 6 hours per person and comfort is not the primary requirement. This material is also easy to sanitize.

Stools for tailoring workshops

Let us now move to a stool model designed for higher workstations, typically equipped with larger benches than standard ones.

As the type of work changes, so do the requirements. For this reason, the most suitable stool is model 1155. Let us now examine the specific features of this work tool and how it differs from other tailoring chairs.

Adjustable footrest

The first distinctive feature is the adjustable footrest. We decided to add a footrest due to the greater seat height adjustment range, where for the vast majority of workers it is impossible to have direct contact with the floor.

The addition of a footrest promotes correct posture during use and provides tailors with a stable support point. It can also be adjusted in height, allowing people of different statures to make the appropriate adjustments based on their height.

Backrest adjustments

Thanks to the slim backrest support, it has been made customizable during use. It is possible to adjust both the height and depth of the backrest. Height adjustment ensures proper comfort according to the operator’s height. Depth adjustment supports workers based on their body build, allowing the backrest to be moved closer or further away as desired.

Ergonomic stools for prolonged use

We now move to the premium version of tailoring stools, model Juke 80. Within our collection of stools for tailoring workshops, a high-end ergonomic product was missing — one capable of offering the same comfort features found in our ergonomic office chairs. We set out to create a stool inspired by one of our office armchairs. The result is an ergonomic stool for tailors that combines the ergonomic features of a certified office chair with the structural requirements of a tailoring workstation. Let us now examine the mechanisms and adjustments integrated into this chair.

Backrest tension adjustment

Compared to previous models, this stool features a synchronized seat and backrest mechanism that follows the operator’s movements during use. In addition to allowing the backrest to be locked in four positions and including an anti-return safety system, this mechanism offers users who prefer an unlocked backrest the possibility to adjust the tension (firmness) of the backrest according to body weight, thus ensuring the right balance for every operator.

Lumbar support

The Juke 80 model features an ergonomic curvature in the backrest with an integrated lumbar support positioned at kidney height. To facilitate adjustment, since the lumbar support aligns with the ergonomic curve, we installed a backrest height adjustment mechanism. With this adjustment, each user is free to position the lumbar support as desired — a feature that makes a significant difference during intensive working days.

Durable padding

In this specific model, the padding is not made of foam sponge. Sponge tends to deform and thin out over the years, which negatively affects seating comfort and can create issues in the lower back area. The cold-foamed polyurethane used for both the seat and backrest does not deform over time and maintains its original thickness, preserving correct comfort for years to come.

Optional adjustable armrests

For certain specific tasks, there may be a need for continuous arm support. This model offers three different types of optional armrests, which vary in shape, height adjustment, as well as depth and rotational adjustment.
